Join us to enjoy a ride through Shinetsu Shizenkyo area,the land of eternal fertility, which is one of the stunning vistas and challenging courses in Japan! This race starts in shotgun style with two departure points from either Madarao (in Nagano Prefecture) or Myoko Kogen (in Niigata Prefecture). This challenging cycling road welcomes you with its beauty of Madarao Kogen, the legend known for links to the Buddhist Mandala tradition, Myoko Kogen with deities of mountain and hot spring, Kurohime Kogen where wood fairies are said to dance within, Togakushi Kogen a gathering place of the gods, and Iizuna Kogen blessed with fertile cropland. Not only the fantastic cycling experience in this great beauty of nature, prepare to be amazed with richly savoring foods and drinks coming from the region’s fertile land that are so refreshing for both your mind and body. Registration Requirements

Participants must be high school age or older, and in good enough health to complete a challenging course within the allotted time as well as to read and agree with the event rules and the Participation Oath established by the executive committee. Minors must provide the written consent of a parent or guardian in order to participate by signing the Participation Oath form. Submission of both Registration form and Participation Oath form are required for enrollment. Before registering, please read the Participation Oath.

                    

Registration Fee for the race

High school age or above: 6,000 Yen per person

If you plan to attend the Dinner Reception, please select accordingly in your race registration for Reception headcount. A separate fee of 3,500 Yen per person is due at the Reception Hall desk on the day of the event.

          

How to register

Please print out both Registration and Participation Oath forms from the event website and fill in the required information. Please send both completed forms along with the applicable registration fee (altogether in a cash registered mail by Japan Post) to the Five Highlands Long Ride Cycling event headquarters at the address in Registration Form.

**About Check-in** It is however expected that the check-in procedure to receive a bib number on the day of race will be crowded. This may result in delaying the start time. Please complete your check-in procedure on Saturday, September 20th. Please see Event Schedule in this document for where to check-in. Check-in schedule is as follows:

Day Before Race Lodging

Participating lodges welcome you with a special package deal for all event participants who need lodging the day before the race.

Per Adult: 5,400 Yen all inclusive, 1 night including light breakfast (Rice balls and tea)
Per Child: 4,300 Yen all inclusive, 1 night including light breakfast (Rice balls and tea)

Dinner and lodging after the event may be available. Please contact the lodges directly. (Please note: Not all lodges have English speaking staff. If you need language assistance, please send your e-mail to event headquarters at info@shinetu5ride.org)

For your lodging needs, please make your selection for each the following:

(1) Lodging area: Race starts from two different locations. Please choose either Madarao or Ikenotaira.

(2) Please book your lodging at one of our partner lodges listed in the official website “Accommodation” tab: http://shinetu5ride.org.

Please explicitly mention that you are registered in the Five Highlands Long Ride Cycling when you make your reservation in order to receive the special package deal.

(3) If you have no preference or are unable to make a lodge selection, please send your inquiry to info@shinetu5ride.org. Event staff will reply with lodging recommendations. By receiving your inquiry e-mail in English, event staff will try to find a lodge with vacancy and English speaking staff. (In your inquiry, please list your name, your start location either Madarao or Ikenotaira, number of rooms you need, number of guests including yourself, age of each guest, sex of each guest, and your contact phone number.)

(4) For those who are staying at participating lodges, you will be able to participate in the race regardless of the event entry limit.

(5) If you are scheduled to attend the dinner reception and staying in Madarao area, please inquire at your lodge for transportation to and from the reception.

The long course includes hills with a variety of elevations, hence we recommend that participants spend a night before the race locally to have enough rest and help become acclimated. The event is supported by many local volunteers, including owners and staff of the lodges listed in the event website. In order to show our appreciation for their volunteering work for this event, we kindly ask for your help to make your lodging arrangement with one of the lodges that are sponsoring our event.

In order for ensured safety of all participants, the final finish time is set at 4:00PM. Participants who don’t anticipate finishing the 120 kilometer course in the allotted time should select the 95 kilometer course. At the turnoff point for 95 kilometer or 120 kilometer courses, a passing time limit is also declared. Participants who are unable to meet the passing time limit will be diverted to the 95 kilometer course. We thank you for your understanding

Same course route as 120 kilometer course, except elimination of Togakushi Kogen (in Nagano City).

The admission fee for the Reception is payable at the Hall desk on the day of the event.

  It is located 1 kilometer from Event Headquarters.

Event Rule

The majority of the course is within the Joshinetsu National Park and Shinetsu Shizenkyo Natural Preservation Areas, therefore we ask all participants not to disturb the untouched natural environment. This event is not a competition but to enjoy sheer pleasure of cycling. Roads will not be closed for traffic control to accommodate this cycling event, thus please follow all traffic laws and prioritize safety of your own and others during the ride.

(1)Follow Traffic Regulations

・Stop completely at all stop signs and red traffic lights.

・Ride on the left side of the road, in a single file.

・Never use a cell phone while riding.

・Leave a safe distance between yourself and the cyclist in front of you.

・In order to pass a cyclist in front of you, please check traffic behind you, then call out to the cyclist of your presence and pass him/her on the right

(2)Follow Instructions by event staff

・Please follow all instructions given by staff during the event.

・Motorcyclist staff will lead the race.

・Bicyclist staff will be also on the road during the race to assist your completion of the race. If you need assistance, please get attention of the bicyclist staff.

・Safety staff in yellow uniform is assigned at commonly mistakable road turn offs to guide you to stay on the correct course.

・For fun, you may encounter “welcome characters” such as a red ogre, a long-nosed goblin, or a witch appearing on the road to greet you with welcome wish.

If you decide to retire from the race, please contact event staff or event headquarters for ensured headcount.

(3)Bicycle and Equipment

・For this race, we recommend using road bicycles, mountain bicycles, or other sport-oriented bicycles. Fixed gear bicycles, reclining bicycles, or tandem bicycles are prohibited for the race.

・There will be no bicycle inspection, therefore please use well maintained bicycle with front and rear brakes.

・For your safety, wearing head gear (bicycle helmet) is required.

・For your safety, please wear appropriate attire for bicycle riding.

・All bicycle maintenance issues such as flat tire repair is the responsibility of each participant. (There is no maintenance vehicle on the road during the race.)

(4)Participation of Minors

Minors (Under 20) may participate only with the written consent of a parent or guardian. Submission of Participation Oath form with additional signature of a parent or guardian is required.

(5)Race Cancellation/Course Modification

Weather conditions may require the event to be cancelled or course shortened. In such event, we regret to say that the Registration fee is not refundable.

(6)Aid Station

・Each Aid Station (AS) has sign-up board for each cyclist to check off for passing for ensuring headcount. When you reach Aid Station, please sign off your bib number in the board.

・Each Aid Station is equipped with restrooms, water outlet as well as a variety of delectable local foods and drinks to freshen you up for the challenging course. (We apologize for last year’s food shortage. We are gearing up this year to avoid such disappointment.) These services are available free to race participants.

(7)Time Limitations

・Each Aid Station has final passing time. Please be aware of the time table in this document.

・For participants who don’t make the designated final cutoff time at Aid Station, the participants are asked to retire the race. An event vehicle on the road will pick you and your bicycle up, and bring you to Aid Station. This is a safeguard enforced for protecting health condition of cyclist showing fatigue in the challenging course.

(8)Important Reminder

・All race participants are covered by accident and injury insurance only on the race day. This insurance does not apply for any other dates.

・Please make sure to bring your health insurance card.

・Each person is responsible for carrying their garbage with them..

・The course passes through national parkland, therefore please stay within the designated course and do not disturb the protected nature.

(9) Event Parking

・Parking is prohibited at the Madarao Kogen start location or surrounding area. Madarao Kogen Ski Resort, Parking Lot #7 will be open to participants for parking on the race day at 4:00AM.

・Parking is prohibited at the Ikenotaira start location or surrounding area. Ikenotaira Onsen Ski Resort Parking Area will be open to participants for parking on the race day at 4:00AM.
